I went to the travel expo expecting to spend a few hours looking at destinations, hotels and tour packages.
I thought I would come back with a few brochures, some new contacts and maybe a few ideas for the future.
But I came back with something more important.
I came back thinking about how much the travel industry has changed — and how quickly it is changing.
The Expo Was Full of Energy
The moment I walked into the expo, there was something happening everywhere.
Travel companies were showcasing destinations, hotels were presenting their properties, tour operators were talking about packages and travellers were moving from one stall to another.
There were beautiful destinations to discover, new travel experiences to explore and plenty of people talking about their businesses.
At first, I was simply enjoying the atmosphere.
But after spending some time there, I started paying attention to something else.
What Travellers Were Really Asking
People were asking a lot of questions.
- How much will the trip cost?
- Can the package be customised?
- Which hotel is better?
- What can we do at the destination?
- What happens if our travel plans change?
These questions made me realise something simple.
People are not just looking for a travel package anymore.
They want to know what their actual experience will be before they make a decision.
Travel Has Changed
A few years ago, someone planning a holiday might simply walk into a travel office and ask for a package.
Today, the journey often starts much earlier.
Travellers search online, watch videos, check social media, read reviews and compare different options before contacting a travel company.
By the time they speak to a travel professional, they may already know a lot about the destination.
That has completely changed the role of a travel business.
The Travel Agent's Role Is Changing Too
A travel agent is no longer simply someone who books a flight or hotel.
Customers want someone who can understand their needs and help them choose the right option.
A family travelling with children may need a completely different experience from a group of friends.
A couple planning a honeymoon will have different expectations from someone travelling for business.
This is where good travel advice becomes valuable.
Technology can provide information, but people still want someone they can trust.
One Conversation Stayed With Me
During the expo, I had a conversation with a travel professional that stayed with me.
He said something very simple.
"Customers don't just want a package anymore. They want someone to guide them."
I kept thinking about that sentence.
It explains a lot about where the travel industry is heading.
What This Means for Travel Businesses
The travel industry is becoming more competitive.
Customers have more choices than ever before, and reaching the right customer is not always easy.
Travel businesses need to build trust, communicate clearly and provide useful information.
They also need to understand how technology can help them reach customers and manage their business more effectively.
The businesses that adapt to these changes will have a better opportunity to build long-term relationships with travellers.
What We Are Thinking About at Travel Steps India
The expo also made us think about our own journey at Travel Steps India.
Our goal is not simply to promote travel packages.
We want to make it easier for travellers to discover useful travel services and make it easier for travel businesses to connect with customers.
There is a lot of potential in Kerala's travel industry, and we believe better connections between travellers, travel companies and service providers can create better experiences for everyone.
What I Learned From the Expo
I came back from the expo with three simple thoughts.
Travellers are becoming more informed.
Technology is becoming more important.
And trust is becoming even more valuable.
These may sound like simple things, but they can make a big difference to a travel business.
The Future of Travel in Kerala
Kerala has everything needed to become an even stronger travel destination.
We have beautiful destinations, unique experiences, hotels, resorts, tour operators and many passionate travel professionals.
The opportunity now is to connect all of these better.
As technology continues to change the way people discover and book travel, travel businesses also need to keep learning and adapting.
I Left the Expo With a Different Thought
I went to the expo looking for new ideas.
I came back with a reminder.
The future of travel is not only about where people go.
It is about how easily they can discover it, how confidently they can book it and how well someone can guide them along the way.
For us at Travel Steps India, that is a journey we are happy to be part of.
And this is only the beginning.
